This Short course has been designed with the overall aim of developing efficient HOME-BASED CAREGIVERS with the relevant skills, and knowledge, to provide primary nursing care, attend to the psychosocial needs of the patients and maintain a safe living environment. It provides the basic training required to perform patient care tasks in any setting with the emphasis on the understanding of patient needs, basic knowledge of diseases, and disability management of patients and the elderly.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

This course will enable participants to become competent home health aides and caregivers.
  • You will learn personal care tasks and core tasks performed in a home healthcare setting.
  • Acquire the necessary skills and knowledge needed in caring for the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions.
  • You will also learn basic anatomy, physiology & pharmacology.
  • You will acquire patient safety skills and learn effective patient monitoring.
  • You will acquire skills and knowledge on infection control.
  • You will also acquire knowledge on basic nutrition and meal preparation.
  • You will acquire skills and knowledge needed in caring for children, mentally ill patients, and those with physical and developmental disabilities.

Who is eligible for this course?

  • Anyone above 18 years of age, who passed O-Level or its equivalent and has a personal or professional interest in providing basic nursing & personal care for patients, elderly people, and people with disabilities.
  • Those interested in exploring a career in home healthcare/ caregiving; who intend to work as home health aides (home health assistants) or personal care aides
  • Home health assistants and caregivers who want to improve their skills and basic knowledge of home healthcare as a form of continuing health education
  • Those interested in having home health agencies

Course Content

  • Elementary anatomy, physiology, human development, and the aging process
  • Disease conditions and disabilities common to specific communities
  • Care for children, the elderly, and the mentally ill patients
  • Measuring and recording vitals and assisting in medicine administration
  • Feeding, Nutrition, and food preparation
  • Caring for patients with Infectious Diseases
  • Patient movement/ transportation and assisting with the referral process
  • Nutrition, food preparation, and feeding
  • Assisting with activities of daily living
  • Dealing with the process of dying and death

Assessment

  • Objective and structured examinations
